What does it mean to be Spiritual?

Updated: Apr 18

Spirituality, to me, is living consciously connected to the Spirit of Life.

It is to recognise the great mystery of existence itself and to know life through a heart-centred approach that opts to embrace Love. Not the so-called Love that holds judgements, expectations and condemnations, but the kind of Love that is unconditional ... that meets the struggles and adversities we may experience through a state of grace and acceptance.

This concept is challenging to grasp when we have not gone inwards to heal our trauma and suffering, as we may perceive acceptance as the condoning of atrocities that play out in our world. and we can struggle with the knowing that we do not need condone the actions that have been taken against ourselves and others, yet we can hold them in acceptance, forgiveness and Love.

To live from a spiritual space means to seek an inner truth, a resonance with the force of creation that exists in, through and around us at all times. It is to meet this force of creation within every person, place and animal that we experience and to recognise the web of connection that holds us in oneness. We meet others as if looking into the mirror and through our experience of ourselves and others we are able to become reflective and self-aware, which furthermore allows us to become authentic in our expression as Human Beings. We become willing to dive deep and explore who we have been and to meet our shadows with compassion, take responsibility for our part in the suffering we have endured as an individual and as a collective, and consciously move into the opportunity for forgiveness through the recognition that forgiveness is part of the path to inner freedom. We recognise that the energetic frequency we put out into the world impacts the whole, and we choose to shift and change our patterns and behaviours to align with a greater truth.

Spirituality is not religion, yet we can be spiritual and embrace religion if we so choose, or not choose. This is the beauty of Life ... we get to choose who we wish to be and how we wish to walk in the world. There are a great many beautiful teachings within various religions that encourage us to embrace unconditional Love and acceptance. So while I personally am not religious, I have integrated many religious teachings into my personal philosophy.

As I choose to walk the Path of Heart, I am connected to all things, I honour nature and the Spirit of the elements: Earth; Air; Fire; Water. I honour the Spirit of all Beings and the great teachings they have to offer to us. I journey into otherworldly realms to connect with these Spirits to ask for guidance and healing and am open to the wisdom that is offered to me.

Shamanic practises have existed in ALL cultures for hundreds of thousands of years, predating religion. Humans lived so deeply connected to the natural world and understood that we are custodians of our Earth, here to respect and protect Her, yet our modern society is currently so separated from our spirituality that we have lost our way and are destroying life on Earth at a rapid pace.

When we turn our faces back to the Sun, back to the Moon and the Stars, back to our sacred Earth Mother, to re-member who we are, we cannot but see that we are part of a great and magical Universe. That we are connected to each other, to our Earth, to ALL Life that exists throughout the cosmos through one unifying source ... Creation itself ... and it is this that, to me, is the essence of Spirituality.
